Projects range from conducting literature reviews and preliminary safety assessments, expert toxicology opinions, to development of detailed dossiers, and management of regulatory submissions. I also serve on scientific advisory panels to provide toxicology expertise.

I have considerable experience with preparation of extensive safety reviews and primary data manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed scientific journals, and serve on the editorial board of several journals.

Education and Background

Berna received her BSHEc with distinction in food science and nutrition. After working in the food industry, she obtained her MSc in Toxicology from the University of Saskatchewan, and her PhD in Food and Nutritional Sciences from the University of Manitoba. Her post-doctoral research focused on the pathology and biochemistry of colon cancer. She was a full-time university faculty member for over 12 years, and is now part-time professor in nutritional sciences at the University of Toronto. Her research has been published in over 50 peer-reviewed journal articles and book chapters, and has led to several patents. Her work focuses on food regulations, food toxicology, and safety assessments of various dietary ingredients and supplements, including nanomaterials.
